Two watches owned by the late Hollywood actor Peter O’Toole will be going under the hammer at an online auction next month. Both pieces were frequently worn by the legendary British actor at high profile events and interviews.
One, an Audemars Piguet 18ct yellow gold, reference 5548 Quantieme Perpetual Calendar, was given to O’Toole by the Sheik of Saudi Arabia. The gift was to honour his iconic performance in Lawrence of Arabia, for which he received his first nomination for the Best Actor Academy Award. It has a pre-sale estimate of £20,000-£30,000.
The second watch, a Baum & Mercier Riviera, has a pre-sale estimate of £2,000-£3,000 and was worn by O’Toole at the 75th Academy Awards in 2003. It saw him presented with the Academy Honorary Award for his career achievements.
During one appearance on ‘Late Night with David Letterman’ in 1983, O’Toole famously wore one on each wrist. When asked why, he replied, “I don’t wish to waste time looking at the wrong wrist."
Both watches were gifted to a family friend by the actor before he died in 2013, aged 81. Aubrey Dawson, managing director of Dawsons Auctioneers, said: "Peter O’Toole was a legendary British stage and film actor, known for his performances and his ‘hellraising’ personality off screen.
"We’re delighted to have been instructed to sell these two beautiful items. Both have excellent provenance and should appeal to watch collectors and film fans alike."
The online auction begins at 9.30am GMT on Thursday, November 17. Private viewings can be arranged in advance by contacting Dawsons on 0207 431 9445.
