Paulo Bernardo lifts lid on Celtic loan departure after chat with Martin O'Neill

Paulo Bernardo has revealed he is enjoying life playing for Gornik Zabrze.

The Celtic player is now relishing the opportunity to play regular first-team football.

He has already made more starts for the Polish league leaders this season than he did throughout the entire last season with Celtic.

Speaking to The Celtic Way, Bernardo said: "It's been nice, a couple of nice months.

"I'm enjoying being here. The club is a really nice club, really good club.

"We are top of the league now and we are doing very well.

"And we want to maintain that and keep building on these results."

Bernardo, who is on loan at Gornik, said the lack of game time at Celtic and being played out of his preferred midfield position were key factors in his decision to leave on loan this summer.

He explained: "It was very important for me to play and I'm still at the age that I need to play.

"Here, hopefully I can do that for the rest of the season.

"Of course it all depends on how I can perform."

After joining Celtic from Benfica in the summer of 2023, Bernardo made 33 appearances, scoring in the New Year derby against Rangers and becoming a regular feature in the Champions League under then-manager Brendan Rodgers.

However, he fell out of favour after Rodgers' departure last October, making only seven starts in the 2025/26 season.

It was then that Gornik came calling and, with minutes on the pitch looking like a rare prospect in the season ahead, Bernardo headed for Poland.

He said: "I don't think in Celtic right now I would have the game time that I needed."

Bernardo also highlighted the differences between Celtic and Gornik, particularly in terms of pressure and fan expectations.

He said: "I think in Celtic we need to win every game or if not it's a big problem.

"Celtic is a big club and the fans and everyone expected us to win every game.

"Here I think it's a little bit less pressure.

"But right now we are winning and when we are winning no one wants us to lose points or to drop points.

"We have to put pressure on ourselves as well.

"Every game is a final here as well. I think it's more like we need to put the pressure on us and not the fans or the crowd put pressure on us."

Gornik have had a strong start to the campaign, winning seven out of nine league games and narrowly missing out on qualification to the UEFA Conference League against Monaco.

The club last won the Polish top-flight title in 1988, more than 13 years before Bernardo was born.

Last season, Michal Gasparik's side missed out on the championship by four points.

Bernardo concluded: "We have these wins and we are doing really well at the moment, but we know that it can turn at any moment.

"We don't want that, but we are enjoying.

"I'm enjoying to play football again and it's the most important thing."
