Gladiator II star and Hollywood’s latest great hunk of spunk Paul Mescal has opened up about one hilarious viral rumour that actually sent his mother (and me) into a concerned tizzy.
With Mescal catapulting into stardom through his acting skills and his iconic short shorts, it’s not surprising that he’s copped a shit ton of rumours regarding his personal life.
However, in a recent interview with GQ ahead of the premiere of his highly-anticipated movie Gladiator II, the Normal People star opened up about one rumour that upset his mother Dearbhla.
During the chat, the Aftersun actor was reminded of the bizarre rumour that claimed he’d ask one-night stands to go for a walk in the park only for him to run away after they’d done the deed.
What makes this rumour even more hilarious is that it bubbled into a TikTok trend, where folks would take pics of Mescal, alleging he’d just got done running away from a root.
Reflecting on the absurd rumour, Mescal revealed that his siblings — brother Donnacha and sister Nell — found the bonkers rumour hilarious. However, his mother wasn’t too pleased with the idea that her son would literally run away after sex.
“We were looking at the videos and we were pissing ourselves at it. Categorically untrue. And we were laughing, laughing, laughing, laughing,” he told the publication.
“And the one thing that upset me was that I was in the kitchen, I remember my mum looking at the videos and she was getting upset. Isn’t that devastating?”
Although he and his siblings thought the fiasco was a big laugh, stating “we know that this is the way the internet works”, Mescal admitted that he forgot his mother would have a different reaction to the runaway root rat allegations.
“It’s hilarious. If it was true, it’d be fucking bad, but as a rumour, it’s funny,” Mescal added.
“Then I was like, Oh, if you’re a mother, her impulse is to come out and be like, ‘He wouldn’t do this.’ ”
Honestly, I reckon if I copped that rumour, my mum would double down and get me some kind of Nike running sponsorship for shits and gigs. That’s actually so sweet of her to be so concerned over the rumour.
