Paul Heckingbottom on Ciaran Clark's medical at Sheffield United ahead of Newcastle United loan

Newcastle United defender Ciaran Clark is edging closer to a loan move to Sheffield United after undertaking a medical at Bramall Lane. The Magpies centre-back was left out of Eddie Howe's 25-man Premier League squad after the arrival of Dan Burn back in January and was told to find a new club this summer.

Clark's attitude can't be brought into question with the Magpies head coach praising the behaviour of those left out of the squad in January. But with Newcastle bringing in Sven Botman to add further competition for places, the former Republic of Ireland international would struggle for game time at St. James' Park.

He's set to complete a loan move to the Championship side in the coming days, if he's passed his medical, with Blades boss Paul Heckingbottom delighted with the potential signing. "He's played at international level, this league and the one above and also the fact he wanted to come here," Heckingbottom told Yorkshire Live. "We weren't the only ones wanting to take him but he wanted to come to us and we say all the time how important that is. If we get that over the line it should be a good one for us."

"We're looking to do something on loan, yeah. It's not definite but hopefully it will be pretty soon," Heckingbottom added.

"That's exactly where it's at [medical]. We're hopeful but we're not going to talk about anything that's not happened so we'll wait but I'm expecting it.

"If we get it done I'll talk like that. He's experienced, he's got promotions out of this league. Good in both boxes and gives us balance on the left hand side with Robbo. So it ticks a lot of boxes for us."
