Patriots’ longtime safety Devin McCourty officially retires from NFL

New England Patriots longtime safety Devin McCourty is officially hanging up the helmet and calling it a career in the NFL. The three-time Super Bowl champion and three-time All-Pro defensive back announced his retirement in a social media post on Friday.

There was always a lingering question regarding McCourty’s future with the team. Back in February, he announced he’d be going on vacation with family before ultimately coming to a decision on his NFL future at some point in March.

With free agency less than a week away, the legendary safety has finally made his decision.

“It has been a great ride. I got the opportunity to talk to Mr. Kraft, to talk to Bill (Belichick), a lot of the guys on the defensive staff. Unbelievable ride,” McCourty posted.

McCourty finished his NFL career with 205 starts, 35 interceptions, 110 pass deflections, 971 tackles and two touchdowns. It has been a stellar career that will surely end with him being immortalized in the Patriots Hall of Fame someday.
