Paisley choir bring smiles to shoppers and raises cash for Ukraine

A community choir brought smiles to the faces of supermarket shoppers – and raised hundreds of pounds for Ukraine.

Rockus Community Choir performed outside Asda Linwood on Saturday afternoon.

The Paisley choir were moved to do something to help raise money for the DEC appeal to help support people in the country.

And they decided the best thing to do would be to sing for one hour and see how much money they managed to raise in their donation buckets.

And Linda Craig from the choir said they were absolutely delighted to raise a fantastic £439.74.

She said: “The Asda customers were extremely generous. We were only there for one hour, imagine what we could have raised if we’d sang for longer?

“It was so lovely putting a smile on people’s faces. The weather was lovely and it was a great afternoon.”

The choir, which was formed in 2011, sang a selection of their popular feel-good songs including Something Inside So Strong, Proud Mary and River Deep, Mountain High.

All the money raised from Saturday’s event is being donated to the DEC Appeal for Ukraine and Linda said they’re already looking forward to doing something similar again.

“We wanted to do something,” she said. “A lot of us are feeling the same, we’re sitting at home watching the TV and seeing everything that’s going on.

“You feel redundant, we’re limited in what we can do. One of our choir members suggested this and we thought it was a great idea.

“It’s something we’d like to do again, we’re already talking about it.”

Rockus was founded and developed by Charlene Gordon and is now under the direction of musician and composer Gregg Muir.

It began with just four members and now has more than 100 who get together regularly to follow their motto, Sing Yourself Happy.

The DEC (Disasters Emergency Committee) brings together 15 leading UK aid charities to raise funds quickly and efficiently at times of crisis overseas.
