Volkswagen is recalling 208,724 SUVs in the US after finding that moisture can eat through a steering-rack mounting bolt shared across three separate model lines, including the Volkswagen Tiguan.
According to NHTSA's recall notice, the bolt in question can fracture if it corrodes enough. A fractured bolt can loosen the steering rack's connection to the vehicle, which can adversely affect steering response or lead to a loss of control.
Which Volkswagen And Audi Models Are Affected
Three nameplates carry the flawed part: 82,601 examples of the 2018 to 2019 Volkswagen Atlas, 85,713 units of the 2018 Volkswagen Tiguan, and 40,410 examples of the 2019 to 2021 Audi Q3. Together they add up to the 208,724 vehicles named in the recall.
Production windows are the key factor here more than model year alone. Affected Atlas units were built between November 30, 2016, and September 22, 2018, while the Tiguan's window runs from March 22, 2017, to June 18, 2018. The Q3's span is May 21, 2019, to July 16, 2021.
Not every vehicle in that build range has the problem. The recall filing lists 208,724 SUVs as potentially involved but does not estimate how many actually carry the defective bolt. The rest use hardware that is not susceptible to the same corrosion.
Owners can check their specific vehicle's status directly through NHTSA's VIN lookup tool rather than waiting on a mailed notice. VINs tied to this campaign became searchable on NHTSA.gov on September 16, 2026, so owners can confirm before any letter arrives.
What A Broken Bolt Means Behind The Wheel
The mounting bolt secures the steering rack to the vehicle's structure on the right side. If moisture works its way in and corrodes the bolt head to the point of fracture, the rack loses part of its anchoring. Steering response can degrade or fail.
Volkswagen and Audi said in a statement that they are "not aware of any issues relating to the steering rack problem appearing within the North American Region." No crashes or injuries tied to the defect have surfaced so far in US filings.
The fix itself is straightforward. Dealers will replace the potentially faulty bolt with a new component that features what the automaker calls "a highly corrosion-resistant polymer coating." The repair is free for every eligible owner, regardless of warranty status.
Recall notification letters go out to owners on November 10. Dealers have roughly seven weeks to prepare parts inventory before that mail date.
