A recent tragedy in Deschutes County, Oregon, has shed light on the challenges faced by individuals struggling with opioid addiction in jails. Kendra Sawyer, a 22-year-old inmate, tragically took her own life after being denied medication to ease her opioid withdrawal symptoms. Her father, Kent Sawyer, has filed a lawsuit against the county, alleging negligence in his daughter's care.

Efforts to address opioid addiction in Oregon jails have gained momentum, particularly in response to the state's drug decriminalization law, Measure 110. Lawmakers are advocating for increased funding for medication-assisted treatment programs in jails to support inmates battling addiction.
