OPINION - Just what exactly is Labour's problem with investigating grooming gangs properly?

Well, whaddya know? It turns out that the five investigations into the child grooming gangs scandal will go ahead after all. The Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, has said in an LBC interview that they are happening as she originally announced in January and to state otherwise was “party political misinformation”. As we were then? No. Sorry, Yvette.

The grooming scandal was to do with vulnerable young girls, some of them in care – pretty well all of whom were white – who were systematically raped in Rochdale, Telford and Rotherham over the course of years by groups of men – pretty well all of whom were Pakistani. But Jess Phillips, whose Home Office responsibilities include dealing with violence against women and girls, has managed to send quite a lot of people from “incandescent” to “fit to be tied” angry about it. They include voters in Labour constituencies.
