The policing minister, MP Chris Philp has backed spectators and sports fans ‘doing a Jonny Bairstow’ to stop protestors from disrupting sports matches.
England cricketer Bairstow physically picked up a Just Stop Oil protester who’d spread orange powder on the field during the 2nd Test at Lord’s.
Mr Philp said spectators stepping in to deal with such demonstrations would be “reasonable”, but added that it should first be the job of stewards and marshals.
Mr Philp also said that ministers are encouraging organisations to consider taking out injunctions to provide more "legal protection".
His comments follow the latest action by Just Stop Oil, whose protestors ran onto the tennis courts at Wimbledon, throwing puzzle pieces and orange confetti onto the ground.
The Evening Standard's Lizzie Edmonds, reporting from Wimbledon, tells The Leader Podcast how Wednesday's disruption affected the event, how security is being stepped up, and discusses whether MP Chris Philp's comments were fair or foolish.
