One dead, one injured in horror Cork crash as gardai shut road

One man has died and another is injured after a horror collision in Cork overnight.

It’s the second fatal crash to happen on Irish roads on Saturday night, after a young motorcyclist lost his life in a collision involving a car in Dublin.

The Cork crash happened on the N71 at Smorane near Skibbereen around 10.20pm. It involved a car and a 4X4.

The driver of the car, a man aged in his mid 20s, was treated at the scene by emergency services but was pronounced dead a short time later. He was removed to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem will be arranged.

The driver of the 4x4, a man aged in his 40s, was also removed from the scene by ambulance to Cork University Hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The scene has been sealed off for a technical examination by forensic collision investigators and local traffic diversions are in place. The coroner has been notified.

Gardai have launched an appeal for witnesses to contact them.

A spokesperson said: “Gardai are appealing for witnesses following a fatal traffic collision in Skibereen, County Cork on Saturday the August 6, 2022.

“Investigating gardai are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them. Any road users who were travelling in the area at the time with camera footage (including dash cam), is asked to make this available to gardai.”

The crash comes less than one hour after a young motorcyclist died following a collision with a car in Dublin.

Emergency services were called to the scene on the R126 Hearse Road at the junction with Cobbe’s lane near Donabate around 9.30pm on Saturday.

The motorcyclist, aged in his early 20s, was treated by emergency services and was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. He was removed to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown where a post mortem will take place.

The road was closed for a time for a technical examination by forensic collision investigation but has since reopened to traffic.
