NYC records first Legionnaires’ disease death as cases linked to AC systems climb

  • One person has died in a Legionnaires' disease outbreak on Manhattan 's Upper East Side , with health officials confirming the fatality on Friday.
  • The outbreak has infected at least 67 people, with many requiring hospitalization, and investigators are actively working to pinpoint the origin.
  • City officials began tracking the outbreak on July 2, and tests have since identified Legionella bacteria in cooling towers across more than 75 Upper East Side buildings.
  • All affected buildings, which include prominent museums, private schools, and residential properties, were mandated to clean, drain, and disinfect their cooling towers.
  • Legionnaires' disease is a severe form of pneumonia, fatal in approximately 10% of cases, and is contracted by inhaling tiny droplets of contaminated water, not through person-to-person spread.
