North East coastal museum wins Tripadvisor's Travellers' Choice Award

Usually, the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade (TVLB) are being called out to help people in distress on the North East coast.

However, the action never stops at the team's Watch House, as when they're not out on rescue missions, tourists often visit the charming building on Spanish Battery in the village, which has been named one of the best places to live in the UK. And now, the volunteer life brigade is celebrating after the museum was declared a 2022 Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Award winner.

The award celebrates tourist destinations across the globe which have received great reviews from visitors over the last year. Award winners are those among the top 10% of listings on the aggregator, chosen from accommodation, attractions and restaurants that demonstrate "excellence."

Led by Watch House Director Dave Bell and Assistant Watch House Director Dave Graham, the museum has a collection of artefacts recreating the history of the TVLB and its involvement in coastal rescues since it was founded in 1864, the first establishment of its kind. The museum reopened in 2014 following a restoration funded in partnership with North Tyneside Council and a major grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The museum has recently attempted to enhance its visitor experience by creating a new exhibit which recreates the scene on a ship's bridge, with controls and audiovisual displays. Volunteers also provide guided tours and talks throughout the year, welcoming groups of all ages. The Brigade is said to be very proud of the recognition its Watch House and its volunteers have received in showcasing the TVLB home.

Dave Graham, who leads on organising Watch House visits, said: "As challenging as the past year was, the Watch House Museum stood out by consistently delivering positive experiences to its visitors, especially school groups and guided tours. I really enjoy the buzz and first impressions you get when visitors enter the museum for the first time and it’s great to able to share the local stories of maritime rescue, ingenuity and triumph."

Kanika Soni, Chief Commercial Officer at TripAdvisor issued a congratulations message, saying: "The Travellers’ Choice Awards recognize the best in tourism and hospitality, according to those who matter most: your guests. Ranking among the Travellers’ Choice winners is always tough — but never more so than this year as we emerge from the pandemic.

"Whether it's using new technology, implementing safety measures, or outstanding volunteers, I’m impressed by the steps you've taken to meet travellers' new demands. You've adapted brilliantly in the face of adversity."
