North Coast 500 in Scotland crowned best driving route in the UK

Scotland's North Coast 500 route has been crowned the best drive in the whole of the UK.

A new study compiled the favourite driving route of 2,000 motorists, and it was found that the northern route was the most popular among participants. It beat out other stunning routes such as Cheddar Gorge in Somerset and Snake Pass in Derbyshire for the top spot.

Spectacular drone footage of the 516-mile route, which starts and ends at Inverness Castle, has been released. The video showcases the incomparable natural beauty of Scotland.

Other popular routes to appear in the top 10 include Kendal to Keswick in the Lake District, St Ives to St Just in Cornwall, and Snowdonia’s Llanberis Pass. The research was commissioned by National Geographic to coincide with the premiere of season 11 of Car S.O.S on March 9.

Presenter of the programme Tim Shaw commented: "The research has highlighted some of the most spectacular locations to drive in the UK, celebrating some of the roads we should all enjoy at some point in our lives. The North Coast certainly feels a worthy winner with its absolutely spectacular scenery.

"However, as a Yorkshire lad myself, the Snake Pass will always have a special place in my heart. Getting behind the wheel and creating memories with those closest to you in breath-taking locations such as these can never be a bad thing."

The study also revealed some of the most enjoyable experiences behind the wheel, including picturesque countryside scenery, smooth road surfaces, and as few traffic lights as possible. Lakes and streams, mountains and cliffs, as well as the ocean, were said to be the most breathtaking.

According to the findings via OnePoll, 82 per cent of respondents like their own car. Reliability, longevity, and memories while driving it were among the reasons given.

Additionally, 84 per cent stated that they had previously been on a road trip, with 47 per cent classing themselves as organised, while 18 per cent prefer a spontaneous approach.

Fuzz Townshend, presenter of Car S.O.S, said: "The study has also shown how much affection there is for not only the love of driving, but the vehicles themselves.

"It’s pleasing to see how many people do like the car they drive, but also the bond they clearly build with their motors. So many memories happen when behind the wheel and the latest series will explore more of these moments."
