'Noisy but handy' - what it's like to have Nottingham City Hospital on your doorstep

Residents with Nottingham City Hospital on their doorstep have described life as "handy" but "noisy". People living close to the campus just north of Sherwood spoke about the positives and drawbacks of the location.

Most praised the convenience of the hospital's close proximity. Some raised concerns over the sound of sirens, but said it "isn't much more than normal". Leah Smith, who lives opposite the campus and works there as a student nurse said: "The positive is that I work there, so just across the road. And when I had my baby it was just across the road. When I had my daughter I just walked over there for appointments and scans."

The 29-year-old added: "When I work I can just roll out of bed and go in. I don't think the hospital affects traffic as the shifts mean they don't clash with rush hour. I see a lot of blue flashing lights but that doesn't bother me."

Jan Drbul, a 32-year-old emergency medical technician who has lived in the area for five years, said: "It's handy if you need anything, if you want to go for a blood test it's good to have it on your doorstep. I don't really use it myself. I've not really thought about the downsides, only that the main road is sometimes busy.

When asked if it brought him any peace of mind, he answered: "It doesn't have A&E so not really, I'll have to go and live by Queen's Medical Centre for that." Larvell Gisby, a 30-year-old marine engineer, added that he was "happy here". "You get ambulance sirens, that's the only downside," he said. "But it's only a couple of times a day so isn't much more than normal."

A 57-year-old mum, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "There are problems with noise and parking but it's not just negative. It's handy to just walk across."
