'No-brainer' - Ally McCoist on Everton manager choice between Duncan Ferguson and Wayne Rooney

Ally McCoist has described the potential appointment Duncan Ferguson as a "no-brainer" and shared his thoughts on reports linking Wayne Rooney with the Everton manager's job.

Rafa Benitez was sacked on Sunday, after a defeat to Norwich left the Blues having won one of their last 13 league games.

Ex-Everton boss Roberto Martinez is viewed as favourite by the oddsmakers , but former strikers Duncan Ferguson and Wayne Rooney are also considered to be in the running.

And McCoist believes current assistant manager Ferguson should be handed another chance to take charge, having had a successful spell as caretaker boss in 2019.

Speaking to Laura Woods on talkSPORT , the ex-Rangers striker said: “I don't think they have to look very far, Woodsy, to be brutally honest with you.

"I think they look (for Ferguson), yes. That's exactly where they look.

"That man has done it before, there is absolutely nobody who knows the club better. I think he has a relationship with supporters that every manager in the country would die for to tell you the truth.

"That will cut him a bit of slack but once he gets in there it'll be just the same as any other manager, it's results how you're judged.

"I just think it's a no-brainer."

During his previous spell in the Everton dugout, Ferguson oversaw a 3-1 win over Chelsea, as well as draws with Arsenal and Manchester United.

Following Benitez’s departure, McCoist has earmarked his former teammate Ferguson as the standout candidate, having played alongside the 50-year-old at Rangers and with Scotland.

An Everton legend, Ferguson has held a coaching role at the club since 2011 and was promoted to first team duties in 2014.

Rooney is another ex-Blue who has been linked with the job but McCoist is doubtful over whether he would leave his current job at Derby, despite facing a relegation battle.

“(Derby) look as though they're playing for each other and certainly playing for the football club and playing for Wayne Rooney. That would be another option,” McCoist said.

“But I think Wayne Rooney is really really enjoying himself where he is right now. I’m not sure right now would be the ideal time for Wayne Rooney to take that job.

“I think down the line it might be absolutely perfect for him.

“I personally love the job Wayne Rooney is doing at Derby and I’d love the continued attempt that Derby have got to stay in the Championship. That would be, by the way, the greatest of all escapes if they manage to stay up.”
