Nicholson leads Townsville to big WNBL win

Lauren Nicholson and Stephanie Reid have combined for the Townsville Fire to start their WNBL season with a bang following a 104-68 win over the UC Capitals.

Club captain Nicholson had 35 points, 33 of at three quarter time and Reid was dominant in the passing lanes as the Fire leveraged a 41-point first quarter into a 36-point victory.

The Capitals had no answer for Townsville's firepower with the hosts shooting 52 per cent from the field and 43 per cent on their 30 three-point attempts.

Reid had 14 of the Fire's 25 assists in the game adding 13 points and two steals.

Mikaela Ruef had 11 points,Tianna Hawkins 15 and Courtney Woods 10 as the Fire finished with five players in double figures in what was a one-sided affair at the Townsville Entertainment Centre.

"Really happy with the way we played from from the jump ball," Ruef told the Nine Network.

"Our defence was amazing and on top of that we shot amazingly, so it's pretty awesome."

Elsewhere in round one, Melbourne began their season with a 16-point win over Perth behind a 32 points, nine assists and three rebounds performance by Tiffany Mitchell.

Sami Whitcomb had 30 for the Lynx but 24 points from Kristy Wallace and 21 from Cayla George gave the Boomers a 104-88 victory.

Perth's next game didn't get any easier as the Lynx fell to Bendigo 85-66.

Bendigo had five players in double figures led by Megan Mckay's 20 points. Chloe Bibby led all scorers with 28 but the Lynx fell to 0-2 to begin the season.

That was Bendigo's second victory of the opening round after they outlasted the Capitals on the road 105-85.

The Spirit had 23 points off turnovers and 25 assists in the game. Five players finished in double figures and Kelsey Griffin led the way with a 25 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double.

Southside Flyers also got their season off to a winning start with a 99-91 victory over the Adelaide Lightning.
