Russell Wilson showed off his custom Liverpool FC trainers as the star quarterback warmed up ahead of the Denver Broncos’ clash with the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium.
Before the match on Sunday, Wilson was awarded a Liverpool home shirt with ‘Wilson 3’ emblazoned on the back. In a video clip, the 30-year-old revealed how he has a special connection with the iconic Merseyside club.
Wilson pointed out that he actually got married to wife Ciara - the pop singer and songwriter - in the city. In order to secure his fandom and celebrate his connection with the city, Liverpool FC sent the family a few shirts while sorting out Wilson’s unique cleats.
“What's up team Liverpool? Russel Wilson here,” the quarterback declared with a smile. “I appreciate the jersey, love you guys. Me and Ciara [Wilson's wife] got married in Liverpool.
“So, Liverpool's got a special place in my heart. I got the new cleats, Liverpool cleats. May have to wear them pre-game or maybe even the game for Sunday and I appreciate the jersey.”
The game pits two teams sitting at 2-5 against one another and each side will be desperate to pick up a win to ignite their respective season after four successive defeats. Wilson will lead Denver and the quarterback is off to the worst start of his 11-year career.
He has completed just 58.6% of his passes (31st in the NFL) with five touchdowns and three interceptions to his name. His 83.4 passer rating is also a career low as Wilson has failed to ignite the Broncos offence in the way many predicted. Part of his struggles can undoubtedly be attributed to a partially torn hamstring that held him out of Week 7 and a shoulder injury that requited work on October 7.
The Broncos’ struggles have been more publicised given their offseason moves and preseason hype only to sit bottom of the AFC West. Denver have finished last in the division for two years running - but this is not the ride Broncos country envisioned when they traded two first round picks, two seconds, a fifth and three players to acquire Wilson before signing him to a five-year contract extension worth $245 million.
