GIAVELLOTTO is expected to build on his podium finish in the St Leger to lift the Listed Peroni Nastro Azzurro Noel Murless Stakes (3.45) at Ascot this afternoon.
It’s true that Marco Botti’s son of Mastercraftsman needed the help of the stewards to finish third in the final Classic – he originally passed the post in fourth behind Eldar Eldarov but was promoted after being badly hampered by original bronze medallist Haskoy.
The run represented a personal best from a horse who has followed an upward curve over a mile and three-quarters this summer – Giavellotto travelled to Doncaster on the back of a handicap victory at Newmarket from a British Horseracing Authority mark of 97.
Now rated 112, Giavellotto still looks the type with more to offer – and Neil Callan’s mount can prove the point with a third success of the campaign.
Later on the Ascot card, APHELIOS has plenty going for him in the Peroni Nastro Azzurro Handicap (4.20).
The three-year-old son of Kodiac has a win and three seconds to show from four outings since joining Mick Appleby from Roger Charlton and has the scope to go one better after a one-length beating by First Folio at Yarmouth last time out.
