Newcastle United transfer rumours as Fabrizio Romano gives update on James Maddison move

Here are the latest bits of Newcastle United transfer gossip on Tuesday, September 20.

Fabrizio Romano reveals Newcastle bids for James Maddison

Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Newcastle United sent two bids for James Maddison to Leicester City's way in the summer transfer window but both were rejected.

Maddison has been one of the Premier League's most reliable midfielders over the past few years and despite his strong start to the season, he still wasn't picked in Gareth Southgate's 28-man squad for the international break.

In fact, the 25-year-old's last - and only - senior international cap for the Three Lions came as a 34-minute appearance in a 7-0 win against Montenegro in November 2019.

Writing in his column for CaughtOffside, Romano spoke about Maddison's surprise exclusion from the England squad and how Maddison came to stay at the King Power Stadium this season.

“I’ve had a lot of fans messaging me about James Maddison, with questions about if he’s been unlucky to miss out on the England squad again, and if he would be more likely to get in the squad if he played for a big six club.

“Gareth Southgate has his own ideas so I can’t say for sure, but personally I consider Maddison a really top player.

“There was interest from Newcastle with two official bids turned down during the summer, but Leicester needed him – then we will see what happens next summer.”

Newcastle considered 'attractive' alternative for Arsenal January transfer target

Former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson has called Newcastle United an 'attractive proposition' to Arsenal's January transfer window target Mykhalo Mudryk.

The 21-year-old has been heavily linked with the Gunners but it seems as though other clubs including Liverpool and Newcastle United could battle them for the winger's signature in the winter.

The Gunners have been the favourites to land the Ukrainian after his excellent start to Shakhtar Donetsk's Champions League campaign where he's scored two goals and found two assists.

“He looks like a real talent,” Robinson told Football Insider. “To be putting in performances in the Champions League at his age says a lot.

“I’m sure there are a few clubs looking at him now. It is only a matter of time before he leaves Shakhtar. They cannot keep rebuffing bids. There will be a figure that they have in mind. Newcastle would be an attractive proposition.

"I think they could do with another top winger. Obviously they have [Allan] Saint-Maximin but I’m not sure [Miguel] Almiron, [Jacob] Murphy and [Ryan] Fraser are going to get them to where they want to be. Mudryk is a player for now and the future. Howe is evolving that squad slowly. I think they will continue to develop over the next 12 months.”

Mudryk himself has noted the pull of the Premier League and says that any player, not just him, would dream of playing in England's top-flight.

“I do dream [of the Premier League]. I think every guy dreams about the Premier League,” Mudryk told CBS Sports two weeks ago. “Arsenal is a very good team with a very good coach. I like the way they play.

"Yes it would be hard to say no from my side, I can’t say no but the transfer is not only my decision and my word. In winter we will see. There was a lot of discussion about the transfer and the collapse [of the deal] and who wants me but it's normal now. I’m in Shakhtar and I want to play in this team.”
