Newcastle United supporters name their Player of the Season after Premier League heroics

It’s been a pretty good week for Joelinton. Just days after scoring a goal on his international debut for Brazil, the midfielder has been named by Newcastle United fans as their Player of the Season.

The 26-year-old’s rise has been well documented since his questionable start in a black and white shirt, but the former Hoffenheim man enjoyed his best season as St. James’ Park as Newcastle marched towards European qualification.

And fans have rewarded those performances by naming him as their stand out player from the season just gone, with thousands of supporters taking part in the vote held by ChronicleLive over the past month.

The Brazilian has become a fan favourite for his tireless performances in the Newcastle midfield, chipping in with eight goals and three assists as well as countless more match-winning contributions.

Joelinton saw off fellow nominees Sean Longstaff, Nick Pope and Alexander Isak to claim the award, picking up a convincing 61% of the overall vote. The finalists were selected by our Newcastle United writers, who were somehow able to keep the list down to only four names.

Longstaff came second in the standings with Pope a close third. Isak, who missed much of the first half of the season with injury but contributed vital goals later in the campaign, claimed fourth place.
