Newcastle United are keen to hear from supporters regarding the possible return of standing at St James’ Park. A thorough enquiry, the Taylor Report, recommended major sporting stadiums convert to all-seater venues following the Hillsborough disaster in 1989.
The Magpies did so four years later, changing the iconic “cathedral on the hill” beyond recognition. A later expansion to its current 52,305 capacity in 1998 is more or less how the ground remains to this day.
Forcing spectators to remain seated has led to less-raucous atmospheres at professional level. Protest groups have pleaded for the Premier League and government to follow European football’s lead and legalise safe standing, with trials across the country proving successful last year.

The government allowed clubs to implement the changes at the start of the season - a major breakthrough for English football fans. Newcastle installed rail seating in the St James’ Park away end ahead of the 2022-23 campaign.
Now, an email to season-ticket holders has asked for their views on whether - and if so, how - safe standing should be erected. Although the Strawberry Corner generates the most noise inside the ground, there is currently no designated singing section at St James’ Park, leading calls from supporter groups - such as Wor Flags - for change.
“Newcastle United is inviting supporters to provide their views on the prospect of safe standing at St James’ Park,” a club email read. “By participating in this survey, you will provide us with important data to help us understand how much of a priority the implementation of safe standing is for Newcastle United fans.
“We are keen to gain a better understanding of how important it is to you as we plan for the seasons ahead and look to provide facilities most reflective of our fans’ needs. Thank you for your participation.”
