Newcastle’s ‘finest hidden gem’ bar celebrates birthday with weekend of DJs, a rave and cocktail offers

One of Newcastle city centre’s most popular bars is celebrating its birthday with a three-day run of events and special additions to their menu.

No. 28 first opened its doors on Nelson Street in 2010, promising to bring “something a little different” to Newcastle’s bar scene. Tucked away up a hidden flight of stairs in the entrance to the Grainger Market, the award-winning bar claims to be the city’s “finest hidden gem”.

April marks 12 years in Newcastle for No.28, and the bar is inviting guests to join them for a long weekend of birthday celebrations. Staff are promising “lots of secret surprises” throughout the weekend, but have announced a few details as to what revellers can expect.

To kick things off the bar will play host to live DJs, welcoming “local legend” Mick Henderson on Friday 22 and Jon DaSilva of Manchester’s The Hacienda fame on Saturday 23. The weekend will then be rounded off with a “birthday rave” on Sunday night.

No. 28 is also marking the occasion by making some celebratory tweaks to their menu, with “birthday cocktails” on offer across the weekend for just £5. Anyone ordering the bar’s famous Bottomless Prosecco Brunch, widely regarded as one of the best bottomless brunches in Newcastle, will get a free mini birthday cake with their order too.

No. 28 recently launched a brand new menu featuring a selection of Spanish-inspired tapas dishes including albondigas, patatas bravas and calamari served up with chef’s own recipe tomato and aioli sauces. The food menu also features mouth-watering creations such as Jack Daniels-glazed crispy chicken wings and black pudding tempura fritters.

Cocktails at No. 28 have also had a shake-up this year, with more than a dozen new additions to the drinks menu. New creations available from the bar include sweet options such as the Turkish Delight-flavoured No. 28 Garden Martini, or fruity concoctions like the apple and bubblegum-flavoured Bonita Applegum.

Open until 3am every night, No. 28 turns into a nightclub from 10pm on weekends with live DJ sets. Earlier in the evening visitors can make the most of the bar’s special food offers, such as the Couples Feast which offers any three tapas dishes with patatas bravas, artisan bread, salad and a drink for £30.
