New police powers after youths cause problems near shops

Police officers will be increasing their patrols in a Merseyside area after youths caused concern.

Merseyside Police confirmed a dispersal zone has been introduced in Page Moss from 4pm on Tuesday, October 18. It will remain in place until 3.59pm on Thursday, October 20.

It comes following "numerous incidents" involving youths engaging in anti-social behaviour, crime and disorder. These issues have centred mostly around the McDonald's on Liverpool Road and the nearby shops.

Many complaints have been made on social media in recent weeks of youths causing issues around the retail outlets. Merseyside Police urged parents for their help.

The force said: "We are asking parents and guardians to support us in this matter. Please know where your children are and what they are up to and educate them about the consequences of engaging in anti-social behaviour."

During the dispersal period, officers will be in the area providing a high visibility presence. The zone covers includes the area bounded by Liverpool Road, Lordens Road, Princess Drive, Fincham Road, St David's Road, Barkbeth Road, Lincombe Road, Huyton House Road, Dinas Lane and all of the shops and retail outlets within.

The dispersal order comes under Section 34 and 35 of the Anti-Social Behaviour and Policing Act 2014, which gives police officers and police community support officers powers to direct people they suspect are causing or likely to cause crime, nuisance or anti-social behaviour to members of the public, to leave a designated area and not return for up to 48 hours.

Under the legislation, officers have the power to direct surrender of any item used (or likely to be used) in behaviour that harasses, alarms or distresses members of the public. Should a person return who has previously been directed to leave the area, an offence would be committed, which they may ultimately be arrested for.
