The developers behind AdventureQuest Worlds have been talking about a modern upgrade of the Flash-based MMORPG for over a decade – you know, for about as long as Flash has been irrelevant. The game's been locked in a custom launcher for ages now, and the devs are finally building a modern port for PC and mobile. Judging by the massive success of their Kickstarter, I'd say the audience is along for the ride.
AdventureQuest Worlds: Infinity aims to rebuild the MMO in Unity, so it can be distributed on Steam, iOS, and Android. Existing accounts will transfer over, and the devs plan to continue providing the same weekly updates they've been providing for the past 18 years in both versions of the game.
Developer Artix Entertainment is clearly making a compelling pitch to fans, as the Kickstarter for AdventureQuest Worlds: Infinity has earned over $1.6 million as of the time of this writing. That blows by the funding goal of, uh, exactly one dollar by quite some margin, but that's by design.
"We are building this game no matter what," the devs say on the Kickstarter page. "This Kickstarter is all about reaching stretch goals to convert more content." That makes the claim that this is the "most % funded Kickstarter in history" feel a little… weird, but hey, it is fun to write out numbers like "164,269,900%."
A similar port of AdventureQuest Worlds was originally meant to launch in 2016, but clearly the project has seen a fair few delays. But alpha testing on Steam is scheduled to begin "shortly after the Kickstarter ends" on April 6, so it's seemingly finally becoming a reality.
"The overwhelming love and support for AdventureQuest Worlds: Infinity surpassed our wildest dreams," the devs write. "We have always said that we build our games for and with you... that has never been more true than this very moment. So… Thank you. Sincerely... thank you. On behalf of ALL of us... THANK YOU!"
