When Denver Nuggets star big man Nikola Jokic was drafted, the broadcast was on a commercial break. And new Boston Celtics forward Anton Watson can relate, at least to the unintended network snub. The former Gonzaga star had his name called during a commercial in the second round as well.
“I’m not saying I’m Jokic, but they did the same thing to him,” joked Watson in a recent interview with the Spokesman-Review’s Theo Lawson. “They put a Taco Bell commercial on him … Might have to get the (Pacifico, the beer that was being advertised) sponsor.” To add insult to injury, his name, as it was called, was mispronounced as the buzz surrounding the eventual 55th pick to the Los Angeles Lakers, Bronny James, grew.
“I think the last 10 picks, they were talking about Bronny,” said Watson. “You don’t try to focus on that, but that definitely puts a chip on your shoulder.”

His thoughts on his new team? “They’re a powerhouse, and they’re just solid all around … I feel like they had all the pieces. Even their bench was deep.”
Boston worked out Watson ahead of the 2023 NBA draft as well. “I knew the Celtics liked me from pretty much last year, when I worked out with them,” he explained. “They stuck with me, and they believed in me, so I’m going to give them everything.”
