New businesses could be built in the shadow of Anfield stadium

A series of new shops, takeaways and businesses could be built in the shadow of Anfield stadium.

Plans have been submitted to Liverpool Council’s planning committee for the redevelopment of cleared, vacant land between Venmore Street, Walton Breck Road, Oswestry Street and Burleigh Road South. Proposals have been put forward for a parade of nine commercial units.

An indicative list submitted as part of planning department documents said potential businesses that could move in include a Co-op food store, Heron frozen foods, a Greggs bakery, Subway sandwich shop, Papa John’s Pizza and a fish and chip restaurant. A beauty parlour could also join the ranks, if planning is approved.

To the rear of the retail units parking is accessed from Venmore Street for 33 spaces, four of which are accessible. The delivery yard is sited to the rear of the units, accessed from the main parking area and fenced from the publicly accessible space.

A single electric vehicle charging point is being proposed by applicant Priority Space Ltd. The proposals have been welcomed in the vicinity of Anfield following more than 380 letters of consultation being issued.

One person described the scheme as a “fantastic idea” while others said the space “needs to be filled with shops, restaurants and other services.” Another respondent said: “ Given the location of LFC stadium, it is crucial that the street looks presentable.”

Merseyside Police in principle supports the proposal for the development of the parade of shops opposite Anfield stadium on Walton Breck Road, despite it being situated in an area described as “high-harm/high-risk.” The force said it had concern about the design of building with the overhang/canopy for the first two units which they stated could “likely encourage loitering and possibly rough sleepers.”

The police said on match days and if weather is bad the public will congregate directly outside shops preventing staff inside from having a direct sight line into the street. The city council’s planning department said subject to appropriate conditions being attached, the project should be approved.

Liverpool Council’s planning committee will meet on Tuesday April 4 at the Town Hall to determine the plans.
