Luther fans were in their element on Wednesday as Netflix revealed first-look footage of the upcoming movie.
After buying the rights from the BBC, the streaming giant is ready to unleash a feature-length production of the hit series starring Idris Elba - and its fans can't wait.
Revealing the movie's title and release date, Netflix shared a number of snaps on Twitter of the star reprising his role and ready for action. The tweet simply read: "Luther: The Fallen Sun. March 2023."
The images show Idris donning his smart suit once more in various situations, without giving anything away to the viewer. And on the upload, fans were quick to share their excitement.
One user wrote: "THIS IS NOT A DRILL," while another gushed: "And just like that Netflix have made my night."
A third seemed similarly overjoyed, writing: "Looking forward to this! Love Idris, he’s such a brilliant actor."
And a fourth said: "Absolutely love this news you know."
One mystery seemingly left alone currently however is whether or not Ruth Wilson's character will be returning. With all the images focussing on the main man, other fans confessed they'll be switching off if Ruth doesn't make the cut.
One user wrote: "If she's not in it I'm not interested!," while another added: "So is she there or not?," sharing a gif of the actress in her role.
The show is set to seamlessly follow on from the last series' ending in 2019 which saw the star character jailed, but Idris admitted that any new viewers won't be lost with the story line as the production offers "a whole story".
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the Hollywood star said of the role and upcoming feature: "He's done so much to bend the law in order to catch the bad guys that he's ended up in jail. So that's where we start the story. He's contemplating what he's going to do with his life."
He added: "The story in some ways continues – if you binge the series from season one to the film, the story is continuous."
"But because the film has got such a larger platform, we thought it was important that if someone was watching the film for the first time that it had its own story. It was important to all of us that the audience could find a way into the series."
