If you've been watching the latest season of Netflix’s ‘You’, you may have noticed a few factual errors in the storyline. The fourth instalment of the American psychological thriller is set in London, and British fans have been quick to point out some things in the show that just don't make sense.
In the new series, Joe, played by Penn Badgley, has relocated to London after faking his own death and fleeing the US. There, he assumes the new identity of Jonathan Moore, and the now professor moves into a flat in South Kensington to start his new life.
This is where fans start to get confused. Joe aka Jonathan claims early on in the show that he walks from his flat to his job at the prestigious Darcy College in London saying "in a city like London, I don't mind the walk".
However, after a bit of digging and some research, fans have discovered a major flaw in this statement.
Viewers were quick to point out that the fictional Darcy College was filmed at Royal Holloway University, which is actually in Egham, Surrey, meaning that Joe's walk home would take almost SEVEN hours.
Then, in one of Joe’s leisurely strolls home, he is seen walking through Shoreditch which would make his total commute over nine and a half hours.
Netflix has responded to this geographical error and have put their hands up, owning their mistakes.
In a TikTok that has since gone viral with a million views, the streaming service shared a video captioned: “pov: you're a Londoner confused by Joe's commute.”
British fans have had a field day with Netflix’s response, some of them respecting that they have taken ownership for this failure saying “Netflix is becoming self aware.”
In response to the viral video, one fan commented: “Is Netflix roasting itself for being factually incorrect? How hard was it for their writers to google the distance, keeping it tinie bit realistic.”
Another wrote: “Not only did he come out of Royal Holloway into Spitafield Market, in one scene he went to work via Oxford, like 60 miles away”.
And, as if that wasn't enough, viewers are now keen for Netflix to explain exactly how Joe can afford a flat in South Kensington on his salary?
The comment section was flooded with You fans asking “More importantly, how does a lecturer afford a one bedroom in south ken?”
“We're confused about his walk "across town" AND how he can afford to live in South Kensington on his salary,” one wrote with another adding “I'm more confused at how he can afford to live in S. Ken on a lecturer's pay.”
One fan of the show said: “I died at a lecturer pay covering rent in South London when there are UCU strikes on.”
