Controversial comments made by Stephen A. Smith about Kawhi Leonard have led to severe backlash from NBA fans, who have called for the pundit to retire.
Leonard missed the final three games for Los Angeles Clippers in their Play-Off series loss to the Phoenix Suns, with his absence a major blow to their chances. Leonard was the most in-form player in the NBA heading into the postseason, but once again suffered an injury.
In an extraordinary rant on ESPN, Smith said that the Clippers should force Leonard to retire, something that stunned co-host JJ Redick. And fans are heavily on Redick's side, after he backed Leonard heavily live on air.
"Steve Ballmer and the Los Angeles Clippers should force Kawhi Leonard to retire," Smith said on ESPN’s First Take. "I’m done. He needs to go home. It’s over.
"He is the absolute the worst superstar you could possibly have on your team. He’s barely ever there, and on top of it all, he does nothing to market or promote your franchise. Absolutely, positively, nothing."
It was a huge take from Smith, who's no stranger to making big statements on the popular sports show. The set became very awkward, as Redick was baffled with what Smith was saying about such a likeable and influential player.
"I mean this in the nicest way possible to both of you (Smith and Chris Russo) - but listening to each of you right now, it's very obvious that you've played zero high-level basketball, and you do not understand the requirements of doing that," Redick said. And NBA fans have backed him, saying that it's Smith that should be the one to retire following his comments.
"ESPN should consider forcing Stephen A to retire from NBA coverage. It is always about him," One Twitter user said. "Stephen A Smith should retire after his horrible takes," another added as frustration grew.
But as usual, Smith seemingly isn't concerned that his opinion isn't popular, retweeting the clip the following day on his personal Twitter page. The season is over for Leonard and the Clippers, who were outclassed by a Suns side who are gaining momentum with Kevin Durant in the side.
It initially looked like the Clippers may cause an upset, as they won the first game of the series. But they never really recovered after Leonard's injury, and were dumped out as a result.
