My London: Millicent Simmonds

Home is…

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I’ve lived there now for nearly two years with my family.

Where do you stay in London?

I’ve stayed at the Soho Hotel and I love everything about it. Soho is the coolest area with the best shops and little pubs on every corner. The decor is beautiful and the food is delicious, but I think my favourite has to be the bathroom because I can watch TV while taking a bath. Two birds, one stone.

Where in London would you recommend for a first date?

I love walking around Covent Garden and the market there. They have tea, shopping, live music and the Cheese Bar. Anything that involves cheese on a first date is a guaranteed success in my book.

What’s the best meal you’ve had?

I had the best fish and chips at Poppies with my mom. Melt-in-your-mouth goodness.

What’s the best thing a London cabbie has ever said to you?

He yelled out of his window, ‘YOU DEAF?’. In his defence he honked at me to move and I didn’t. I’m also deaf so, valid.

Where would you most like to be buried in London?

I think I’d like to be cremated and my ashes spread in the food court at Seven Dials so I could smell the food there for eternity.

What do you collect?

I may or may not take spoons from restaurants that I’ve loved. I guess it’s just my way of remembering them. So if I steal a spoon from your restaurant, it’s a compliment. And that also might be my way to a run-in with a London police officer.

What would you do if you were Mayor for the day?

I would order banoffee pie white hot chocolate every hour on the hour, and one of everything from Cakes & Bubbles at the Hotel Café Royal.

What makes someone a Londoner?

Saying the word ‘lovely’ a minimum of 50 times a day, a cap and/or an exquisite scarf. Simple, really.

Who is the most iconic Londoner?

Oh man, there are so many to choose from! Diana, The Beatles, but I’ll go with my favourite, David Bowie, the epitome of cool.

Where do you go to let your hair down?

The Aire spa. It is heaven! And it’s always entertaining when someone walks head first into a giant glass pane. True story.

Who do you call when you want to have fun in London?

That would have to be Noah Jupe [who plays her brother in A Quiet Place] because there is no one more fun. Or cheeky.

Who is your hero?

Professionally, I would say Julianne Moore and Emily Blunt. Julianne was the first actor I met in this business and she could not have been more welcoming. They are both very maternal, funny and brilliant actresses.

Biggest extravagance?

Afternoon tea at Claridge’s. That is extravagance at its finest.

What’s your London secret?

Don’t tell my dad but I had my first drink in London (a strawberry Daiquiri at Chiltern Firehouse), because at 18 it’s legal in the UK. I guess it’s no longer a secret.

What are you up to for work?

I’m here in London as I’ve been nominated for the EE Rising Star award at the Baftas.
