Mum woken by shouting outside before realising home had flooded

A mum who woke up to shouting later found her home flooded.

Fire service, police and United Utilities were called to Scarisbrick Road at the junction of Smithy Lane in Scarisbrick, earlier this morning due to a huge flood. The woman, who did not want to be named, said she heard shouting outside her home at around 6am on Monday, June 26.

She told the ECHO the front and ground floor of her house has been damaged by the water. United Utilities confirmed it was dealing with a burst water main which has led to some properties being damaged.

Speaking to the ECHO, the mum said: "We heard the kerfuffle this morning at around 6am. I had no idea what was going on and heard shouting outside. It is not good at all, our house is quite flooded to be honest and our neighbours are flooded.

"The Nellie is quite severely damaged. The front of our house and the floor is damaged."

The mum said her family were offered to be moved while emergency services dealt with the incident but she said they turned down the offer as they were "on top of" sorting the damage.

She added: "The police have been really helpful, the fire service have been great and United Utilities have been great."

Emergency services and volunteers have been helping those impacted by trying to clear the traffic and support the houses with sandbags. The mum told the ECHO how emergency services have only "got control of the flooding in the last hour".

Nellie, an Indian restaurant in the area, has been severely impacted by the flood. When the ECHO called the restaurant, they said it was flooded "very, very badly" and it will "take hours and hours" to clean.

On Facebook, the restaurant showed the impact of the flood, with the whole car park and front surrounded by water. Pictures of the area show firefighters working at the scene, with water pumps draining the flooding.

Videos shared with the ECHO showed sandbags covering the road as the water continues to flow down the road. Smithy Lane at Pinfold Lane is currently closed to traffic.

A spokesperson for United Utilities said: “Our teams are on site on Southport Road in Scarisbrick dealing with a burst water main. Unfortunately the initial burst this morning led to some localised flooding, and our insurance team are in contact with the owners of the affected properties to arrange clean up and offer further assistance.

“We apologise for any localised disruption to water supplies or traffic while our engineers carry out the repair.”

Lancashire Fire and Rescue have been contacted for comment.
