Mum who found pencil in Burger King order told 'not to worry'

A mum who found a pencil in her Burger King order was told “not to worry” by one of the fast food chain’s employees. She got an unwelcome surprise after opening up her Chicken Royale with bacon.

Leanne Daly, 41, from Bootle, Merseyside, said she had bought Burger King meals for a night in treat for her sons on Monday, October 3, when she found the pencil inside a burger. The mum had purchased the burgers from the chain’s restaurant on Stanley Road in Bootle.

The 41-year-old mum, who orders from the popular fast food chain “all the time” as it is usually “really fresh”, was shocked and could “not believe it” when a pencil rolled out of her burger. She immediately called the restaurant but was not given an apology.

Speaking to the Liverpool ECHO Leanne said: "My son passed me my burger, I had some and felt something weird. So I opened it up and a pencil rolled out. I thought 'what the hell is that' as it looked like an eyeliner.

"So straight away I called them up and asked for an explanation and told them I had something in my burger. I described what it looked like and she told me 'not to worry' as it was only a grease pencil they used to mark the burger wrappers."

The employee told Leanne to "rest assured" that it was not eyeliner as she was the "only woman on shift". Leanne was then told to get a refund online before the employee hung up the phone.

Leanne said: "I thought what good is that to me? It should not be in my food anyway and she was not apologetic at all. My first thought was that someone has been doing their makeup while trying to make burgers at the same time and if they have missed a pencil going into a burger what else have they missed?"

The family decided not to eat their food after the incident. Leanne was given a refund.

A spokesperson for Burger King said: "We apologise for the impact this incident has caused and have investigated the matter raised.

"We want to re-iterate that Burger King UK strives to deliver the best customer experience and the highest-quality meals possible at all times. We will be working to ensure all necessary measures and staff training are reinforced to meet these standards."
