A woman has been slammed for taking the attention away from her husband's birthday to announce her pregnancy - without consulting him first.
The woman took to social forum, Reddit, to ask for advice after she made the announcement that she was pregnant at her husband's birthday party. She had not discussed it prior with her partner, and his friend ended up calling her out for what he described as a "selfish" action.
The woman didn't think she had put a foot wrong when announcing the pregnancy to her family, but asked for help anyway when it came to the uncomfortable situation.
Writing on Reddit, the woman said: "I found out a day before my husband's birthday that we're expecting our first baby. I wanted to make it special for him so I decided to tell him the next day.
"He does not really like to celebrate his birthdays but this year his family is moving abroad so we decided to throw a party where all close family and friends can gather before they move away.
"All of them were the people whom I knew were gonna be really happy by this news. So I decided to announce it in front of everyone. My husband was of course the happiest one but after that, the rest of the party was all about me and the baby.
"Some even forgot to wish him because they were busy congratulating me. I kinda felt bad for taking the attention away from him but he didn't even seem to mind it."
The woman continued: "Later that day, his best friend came to me when I was in the kitchen just to say that it was very selfish of me to announce my news when it was my partner's day, he said that my partner does not even celebrate his birthdays and now that he decided to celebrate one, I shouldn't have made it all about myself.
"He even accused me of doing it on purpose because according to him I can not stand it when all attention is not me. I decided not to argue with him because he's never liked me but I can't help feeling awful for taking all the attention away from him.
"He has not hinted that he is upset at this and I haven't told him yet what his friend said."
Readers were upset with the woman's behaviour, and agreed with the husband's friend on her somewhat selfish decision.
One Reddit user wrote: "Your husband should have been told privately before making it public."
Another said: "His birthday or not, you took away a once-in-a-lifetime moment for you two to intimately share this moment. You also took away from him the chance to tell people himself about the news.
"Thoughtless. Also yeah, d*** move to do it on his birthday - particularly since he usually doesn't celebrate them and this was an exception."
A third wrote: "You don't make someone else's special day or celebration about you - and that's what you did."
More comments read: "In my opinion but it really depends on how your husband feels. I think this is something you should have shared with your husband and only your husband first.
"He then could have decided if he wanted to make an announcement or keep it private a little longer."
One added: "Did you tell your husband before hand? No, you should have told him if you could announce it together. Also, why didn't you ask him after? You don't seem like a good communicator."
Another noted: "You should have told your husband before anybody else. You already know that."
