Ashley Griggs—the mother of Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate—was shot and killed Sunday in the West Garfield Park area of Chicago, the university confirmed in a statement. She was 40 years old.
“We can confirm this was Carnell’s mother,” the statement read. “Our coach and coaches are aware of this terrible tragedy, incredibly saddened and they, along with our players, will support Carnell in any way they can during this most difficult time.”
Police responded to a shooting on West Washington Street in Chicago at around 2 a.m. and found five people injured, including Griggs. She was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Per WLS-TV in Chicago, no suspects are currently in custody.
Tate, who played high school football at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., committed to play for the Buckeyes on June 20, 2022. Ohio State is slated to open its season Sept. 2 against Indiana in Bloomington.
