Alan Hutton admits he would be 'very surprised' if Morgan Whittaker wasn't a Rangers player by the close of the January transfer window.
The Light Blues have already had two bids rejected for the Swansea City attacker but are expected to go back in with a fresh move. The Ibrox men were handed a boost after he was l eft out the most recent match against Queen's Park Rangers. There were fears that a swoop for the talented winger would be scuppered because, having been on loan at Plymouth, if he turned out Russell Martin's men he wouldn't be able make the switch as players can only turn out for two teams per season.
However, that scenario is now out of the equation with the English Championship side now not playing until after the winter dealings come to an end. They next take to the field on February 4 against Birmingham City. Michael Beale has already completed one transfer in the shape of Todd Cantwell from league rivals Norwich City. He's joined on a long-term deal.
Nicolas Raskin from Standard Liege is looking like another who could walk through the doors in Govan before next week's deadline while Whittaker is the other name that Rangers are trying hard to get in the door. Hutton reckons the 22-year-old is the 'number one' choice of the Light Blues boss and fits the bill for what he is looking for. A deal not being completed at this stage would leave the former Ibrox defender and pundit 'very surprised'.
He told Football Insider: “I would be very surprised if he did not have other options on the table.
“This seems to be his number one choice. They have had a bid rejected which means they probably are not far off it. They probably will come in with another bid.
“He fits the bill, the same with the likes of Cantwell. He is young, he has been impressive this season so I think they will remain in for him.
“I would be very surprised if that one does not get over the line between now and the end of the window.“
