More stores including Co-op and Starbucks recall chicken products amid salmonella fears

Cooked chicken products have been removed from the shelves of more retailers over fears they could be contaminated with salmonella.

Costa, Starbucks, the Co-Op and Amazon have joined Tesco, Aldi, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, Marks and Spencer and Pret a Manger in clearing sandwiches, wraps and ready meals after an outbreak of the food poisoning bacteria at a major chicken processing factory.

The recall started last week, after salmonella was discovered in 'a limited number' of cooked chicken products, according to the supplier, Cranswick. The recall is for products made in the company's Hull factory, but are sold as ingredients for sandwiches, deli products and meals to retailers and food to go outlets throughout the UK.

A statement from the company said: "As a precautionary measure, we have asked our customers to remove any of their products containing our ready-to-eat chicken produced during the affected period. We are working closely with the Food Standards Agency and will collaborate with their experts to resolve the matter."

All stores have issued recall notices, and have told customers to return any affected products they have bought before the recall for a full refund.

The worst affected retailer is Sainsbury's, which has pulled more than 30 chicken products from stores, followed by Tesco, which has removed 13 products. |The full list of earlier recalled products is here.

Salmonella causes diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps and a fever, and can lead to hospitalisation in severe cases, although it not yet clear whether anyone has been ill after eating the contaminated food.
