MLB's Latino of the Night: Ranger Suárez remains untouchable with 9th season win for the Phillies

SEATTLE - In another Cy Young-worthy performance, Venezuelan lefty Ranger Suárez continued his domination in the mound in the Philadelphia Phillies' 5-2 win over the Texas Rangers on May 21.

Suárez, who is now 9-0 this season, threw for seven innings and allowed just one earned run to take his season average to 1.36 ER in 10 starts.

Tossing seven innings against the reigning champions, Suárez allowed five hits, two walks and just one earned run while tying his career-high of 10 strikeouts.

This season, Ranger Suárez has been on a category of his own. After starting the season with a no-decision against the Braves, the Venezuelan has won nine consecutive starts, becoming the first Phillies pitcher to do it since Earl Moore in 1910.

What Suárez is doing is historic, with stats backing this claim. He has allowed seven earned runs during that nine-game win streak and he is the first pitcher to start 9-0 with a sub-1.50 ERA through 10 starts since the legendary Dominican right-handed pitcher Juan Marichal did it in 1966.

"It's kind of mind-boggling, you know?" Phillies manager Rob Thomson said. "The historic run that he's been on, he's just been pitching great. Knock on wood he keeps it going."

His great numbers have Suárez as one of the favorites to take home this year's National League Cy Young award. According to DraftKings, the Venezuelan has the third best odds to win the award (+500) only behind Zack Wheeler (+300) and Japanese sensation Shota Imanaga (+400).

It's been 14 years since a Venezuelan pitcher won a Cy Young award. The last time it happened was when "King Félix" Hernández was named the AL Cy Young winner in the 2010 season with an ERA of 2.27 and 232 strikeouts in the season.
