Mischa Barton joins Neighbours cast for soap’s revival as new American character Reece

The O.C. legend Mischa Barton is joining the cast of Neighbours for the soap's revival on Amazon's Freevee.

The 37-year-old actress will be guest starring in the next series of the soap, which was previously axed from Channel 5.

She will be arriving in the fictional Melbourne suburb of Erinsborough as Reece, an American new to the area.

According to her description, Reece is "not quite who she appears to be".

Opening up about joining the long-running soap, the Hollywood star explained: "I’m excited to be part of this iconic show’s next chapter, and I am really looking forward to being back in Australia, a place I know and love!

"I think the character of Reece is going to be a great role for me to explore and play with."

Neighbours’ executive producer Jason Herbison said: “With Neighbours launching on Amazon Freevee in North America, we are beyond excited to have an actor of Mischa’s calibre join us for the beginning of this exciting new chapter.

“Mischa’s character is dynamic and unpredictable and will have an instant presence on Ramsay Street. Our loyal viewers are going to love her, locally and abroad.”

The soap, which first aired in 1985, is returning with a new series in August.

Neighbours is officially filming for the new season and the soap teased a first look on social media earlier this week.

The soap's official Twitter page released two snaps with the new series' core cast members with the caption: "Lights, camera, action, let's go! Brand new Neighbours is officially in production!"

Neighbours veteran Alan Fletcher, who plays Karl Kennedy, can be seen posing with a 'day one' clapperboard and a glass of bubbly alongside Rebekah Elmaloglou (Terese Willis), Annie Jones (Jane Harris), Lucinda Cowden (Melanie Pearson) and Stefan Dennis (Paul Robinson).

In another snap, the gang grinned next to a bunch of balloons as they got ready to get back to work.

Fans were heartbroken when Channel 5 declared it was the end of the road for Ramsay Street last year with stars of the show including Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan getting together for a send-off special.

Thankfully, just months later, it was announced Neighbours had been saved - along with much of its beloved characters.
