Minister hits back after Shabana Mahmood called for him to be sacked

  • Mike Tapp, a home office minister, is facing calls for his dismissal after publicly challenging the home secretary’s plans to tighten settlement rules for foreign care workers.
  • Mr Tapp wrote an article in The Time s, expressing his "strong belief" that foreign care workers already in the UK should not face extended waiting periods to qualify for indefinite leave to remain (ILR), directly contradicting proposed government policy.
  • The home secretary, Shabana Mahmood , has proposed doubling the time for most migrants, including those already in the UK, to qualify for permanent residence to a decade.
  • A government source indicated the home secretary requested Mr Tapp's sacking for breaching collective responsibility, believing he wrote the article without her knowledge and against Home Office policy.
  • Despite the demands, Downing Street confirmed Mr Tapp remains in his post, with Sir Keir Starmer yet to make a decision on his future, amidst broader government leadership turmoil.
