Microsoft is officially retiring Outlook Lite on Android on May 25, 2026, ending support for the lightweight email client designed for low‑end devices and slower networks. The company is directing users to transition to the full Outlook app, which now serves as Microsoft’s single mobile email experience.
While Microsoft says the main app has improved enough to replace Lite, the change raises concerns for users who relied on the smaller footprint and faster performance. The move also signals a broader consolidation of Microsoft’s mobile strategy as it focuses on a unified Outlook experience across platforms.
This news, spotted by Neowin, didn't come out of nowhere, as Microsoft originally announced its intentions to begin the Outlook Lite retirement process in September 2025.
The Outlook Lite app will stop working almost entirely (you'll be able to launch it, but that's about it) after the cut-off date, according to a Microsoft 365 MC1276508 support message. If it's the main way you access your email, I recommend setting up an alternative app now.
Microsoft recommends the Outlook Mobile app, designed for Android and iOS, and it's making it easy to transition. You can simply sign in to your accounts in the Outlook Mobile app to access all of your regular calendars, messages, and attachments.
If you're still using Outlook Lite at this point, you should see an alert asking you to switch to the other app.
Of course, many users appreciated Outlook Lite's small package that didn't use up much install space or eat as much mobile data, and it climbed beyond 10 million downloads in its lifetime. Microsoft cut access to Outlook Lite downloads on October 6, 2025.
Why is the Outlook Lite app for Android being retired?
Outlook Lite has been around since 2022 for Android devices in specific regions, and it quickly became a popular option. With a 5MB install size and a narrower feature list, it was especially appreciated in emerging markets and with users owning older hardware.
Microsoft's decision to abandon the Lite version likely has to do with streamlining development and upping security. It can now focus entirely on the Outlook Mobile app going forward.
Although Microsoft recommends switching to Outlook Mobile, you aren't necessarily beholden to the official offering. Off the top of my head, Android mobile users might want to check out Proton Mail, Spark Mail, or the standard Gmail app as alternatives.
