Michael Mosley shares two indulgent desserts that can help with weight loss

Dr Michael Mosley has been helping people lose weight for years, using his expertise to create new diets that make it easier for those looking to shift the weight.

He pioneered the Very Fast 800 diet and the new 5:2 diet, both of which promise to make weight loss less of a challenge.

One of the first things people usually ditch when shedding the pounds is desserts, eventually making the new diets bland and boring, leading to many relapsing.

However, Michael now recommends two puds you can keep enjoying thanks to their relatively low-calorie intake.

Here are the desserts you can still enjoy on your weight-loss journey.

Chocolate may be considered a complete no-go on a diet; however, it entirely depends on the type you are craving.

Milk chocolate is obviously high in calories and sugar content, but dark chocolate actually has a few health benefits.

Surprisingly, this is also true with alcohol, within reason, as stated on The Fast 800 website, and these two can make an ideal after dinner treat.

It reads: "Research shows that resveratrol, a compound present in red wine (as well as in blueberries, cranberries and cocoa) can contribute to the health benefits of the Mediterranean Diet.

“So, if you would like to complement your recipes with the occasional glass of red or piece of dark chocolate, you can.

"Just be mindful on fasting days as the calories can be significant."

The trick is not over indulging in these treats, but rather having them a few times throughout the week as a reward for maintaining the rest of your diet.

It doesn't just end there though, as fruits can be also be a perfect dessert substitute, though once again you should be careful about which ones you're having.

On the website it reads: "Enjoy berries, apples and pears, which have less sugar than sweet, tropical fruits such as mango, pineapple and melon."

What is the Very Fast 800 diet?

The Very Fast 800 is a low-carb, Mediterranean-style diet.

Essentially, it is a form of calorie-counting, as those following it should restrict themselves to 800 calories a day.

Thanks to the Mediterranean cuisine, which focuses on lean meat and lots of fresh vegetables, you will be able to consume more meals with a relatively low calorie count, making it easier to maintain in the long term.

What is the 5:2 diet?

The new 5:2 diet is an extension of the original Fast 800, but instead doesn’t require you to maintain 800 calories per day.

Rather, it means you should consume 800 calories just twice a week.

The other five days you no longer need to calorie count.

It means your results won’t be as rapid as the Very Fast 800, but should be far more manageable in the long-term.
