Washington has confirmed its first known cases of H5N1 bird flu in dairy cattle. Two dairy farms in Yakima County are now under quarantine after federal laboratory testing confirmed the virus, the Washington State Department of Agriculture announced Thursday.
The detection ends a long run of negative results. State officials said more than 7,000 surveillance tests for the virus over the past two years had all come back negative. According to the department, dairy cattle in 19 states have been infected since the national outbreak began in March 2024.
