Michael Mosley shares best diet to 'lose weight fast' without giving up carbs

The best diet for losing weight is much debated, but Michael Mosley supports a version of the lauded Mediterranean diet to shed pounds quickly.

Inspired by cuisines of countries like Italy and Greece, the Mediterranean diet is held up by doctors as a heart healthy way to eat. Michael, the founder of the Fast 800 and 5:2 diet, claims it could help slimmers lose weight fast - and keep them off.

The diet guru has suggested opting for a low-fat or a Mediterranean diet rather than a very low-carb diet when it comes to reaping the benefits long-term, the Express reports.

Michael explained: "The same goes for low-fat dieters who eat lots of refined carbs. But those who eat a balanced, Mediterranean-style diet lose weight and keep it off, according to research. They also benefit from lower 'bad' cholesterol and blood sugar levels."

"I think the scientific evidence is overwhelmingly in favour of the latter," he said.

"If you want to lose weight fast or get your blood sugars under better control, then your best approach may be to start off with a low-calorie, low-carb Med-style diet until you have achieved your goals.

"Then you can add in more grains and fibre for the long-term benefits this will bring to your microbiome and therefore to you."

If following the Mediterranean diet, people can expect to eat the following:

Protein - Beans, lentils, chickpeas, tofu, tempeh, chicken, fish, seafood, eggs, red and cured meat is to be eaten rarely

Oil and fat - Extra-virgin olive oil, avocados and avocado oil, olives, canola oil

Nuts and seeds - Almonds, pistachios, hazelnuts, walnuts, cashews

Grains - Whole-grain bread, whole grains, oatmeal, whole-wheat pasta, couscous, whole-grain crackers, polenta, all-bran cereals

Dairy - Plain Greek yoghurt, plain ricotta and cottage cheese, milk, cheese (brie, feta, or goat cheese)

Sweeteners - Honey, small amount of added sugar in coffee or tea

Condiments and sauces - Tomato sauce (no sugar added), pesto, balsamic vinegar, aioli, tahini, tzatziki

Drinks - Water, coffee, tea, red wine can be drunk occasionally

Herbs and spices - All dried herbs and spices, all fresh herbs, garlic, salt

Michael's diet plan

His own latest technique, the Fast 800 Keto diet, has taken elements from his other rapid weight-loss strategies to ensure followers continue to burn body fat efficiently and effectively.
