Michael Mosley's top 10 weight loss foods recommends 'surprising' vegetable

Protein is important for overall health and it also plays a role in shedding pounds.

Diet guru Michael Mosley previously explained how the macronutrient helps weight loss and he's now listed his top 10 protein sources - and one may surprise you.

Unlike carbohydrates and fats, excess protein doesn't store in the body, so it's important to eat plenty to get your recommended daily allowance. Because of this, experts advise adults try to eat 60g of protein a day.

While it's heavily associated with animal foods like meat and dairy, broccoli is also a great vegetarian protein source. According to Mosley, one full raw broccoli is packed with folate and potassium and has almost 2.6g of protein and just 31 calories per serving.

Writing on the Fast 800 blog on Thursday, Mosley said: "It might surprise you to learn that broccoli is high in protein compared with other vegetables. While it isn’t enough to eat as your sole protein source, choosing this green over other veggies may help to boost your daily intake."

There are many weight loss diets that recommend cutting out specific nutrients like fat or carbs, but Mosley's "top tip" for slimming down is to eat plenty of protein whatever diet you choose.

Protein is one of the key drivers of cell repair in the body, so it's necessary for good bone health, as well as muscle maintenance. Not only can it keep hunger pangs at bay, but it can also help keep prevent weight regain.

Broccoli isn't the only protein packed veggie, but it is more commonly found in pulses like beans, chickpeas and lentils. Of course, animal foods like meat and dairy products are jammed packed with the nutrient.
