Met Eireann ominous February weather update as 'passing cyclone centres’ could trigger storm chaos

Met Eireann has issued an ominous forecast for mid-February, warning that storm-like conditions could be on the way.

While the coming week is expected to have average weather conditions for this time of year, a big change is on the cards for the week beginning Bank Holiday Monday, February 6 until Sunday, February 12.

The national forecaster has said “cyclone centres may pass close to Ireland”, and has refused to rule out weather warnings saying they “are possible during this period”.

It added the week will be “unsettled with fronts moving across Ireland in a mobile westerly airflow bringing spells of wet and possibly windy weather”.

The full forecast for that week reads: “High pressure will lose its influence over Ireland during Week 2 with low pressure being the main feature of our weather, primarily located near to the north of Ireland. This week will be unsettled with fronts moving across Ireland in a mobile westerly airflow bringing spells of wet and possibly windy weather.

“Cyclone centres may pass close to Ireland, and weather warnings are possible during this period. Higher than normal rainfall is expected, with totals highest along the western half of the country. Temperatures will be average for the time of year.”

In the meantime however, the country can expect standard weather conditions for this time of year.

The meteorological service said this weekend will have “mixed conditions with a fair amount of dry weather and some rain or drizzle at times.”

Its forecast for today reads: “Today will be mostly cloudy as patchy light rain and drizzle moves southeastwards over Ireland. Bright or sunny spells will follow over Connacht and Ulster by noon and will extend further south and east through the afternoon. Highest temperatures of 7C to 10C with light southwest breezes veering northwesterly.

“Tonight will be mainly dry with clear spells and some patches of mist or fog. Cloud will increase in the west and north overnight. Lowest temperatures of 0C to 5C with a touch of frost in places with light to moderate southwest breezes.”

Looking ahead to tomorrow, it continued: “Sunday will be mostly cloudy with best of any brighter intervals in the southeast in the morning. Patchy rain and drizzle in Connacht and Ulster in the morning will become more persistent in the afternoon and evening. Highest temperatures of 9C to 11C with moderate southwest winds increasing fresh westerly later.

“On Sunday night, rain and drizzle will clear to the southeast and it will become dry with clear spells. Lowest temperatures of 1C to 5C with moderate westerly breezes.”

Monday’s forecast reads: “Monday will be mainly dry with bright or sunny spells at first. Cloud will gradually increase and during the afternoon, rain and drizzle will develop in western areas. Highest temperatures of 8C to 10C in mostly moderate west to southwest breezes.

“On Monday night, rain will become more persistent in the west and northwest and will move southeastwards across the country overnight. Lowest temperatures of 4C to 7C with moderate to fresh westerly winds.”
