A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Gale force westerly winds for a time this afternoon and evening with some severe and damaging gusts. Winds will reach storm force in coastal areas."
Meanwhile, a Status Yellow wind warning is in place for all of Ireland, urging the public to brace themselves for possible disruption.
The warning came into force at 5am this morning and will remain in place until 2am on Friday.
Met Eireann said: “Westerly winds will be very strong and gusty today, in the west at first, progressing eastwards in the afternoon, reaching storm force at coastal areas of the northwest.”
This forecaster also warned that there could be "downed trees, power outages and travel disruption" throughout the country as a result.
Alongside the wind, Thursday is expected to see showers across the country with "frequent and prolonged" rain in Ulster leading to a chance of isolated thunderstorms, hail, and possible localised flooding.
Temperatures will range between 7C and 9C, dropping to between 3C and 6C tonight.
There will also be showers overnight as well as a chance of "hail or isolated lightning" in Atlantic counties.
