Mercedes driver arrested on suspicion of drink driving after M6 crash leaves woman with 'serious' injuries

A man has been arrested after a three-car smash on the M6, close to the border of Trafford and Warrington.

The 47-year-old from Chorley, who was driving a white Mercedes AMG, has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving. It follows a collision involving the Mercedes, a red dropside lorry, and a black Nissan Qashqai, on the Thelwall Viaduct

During the crash, which took place between junction 20 and 21 of the southbound carriageway, just before 2pm, the Nissan overturned. One of the passengers - a woman - suffered serious but 'non-life-threatening' injuries, Cheshire Police confirmed.

A force spokesman said: "Officers were called just before 2pm on Wednesday 27 July to the M6 between junction 20 to junction 21 following reports of a collision involving a red dropside lorry, a black Nissan Qashqai, white Mercedes AMG. As a result of the collision, the Nissan overturned.

"A passenger in the Nissan, a woman, has sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Mercedes, a 47-year-old man from Chorley has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving."

According to traffic monitoring website Inrix, one of the vehicles went over the central reservation of the motorway into oncoming traffic, between junction 20 and 21. Lane closures remains in place while barrier repair works are carried out.
