In a city that thrives on the fast-paced corporate world, a home cook in Bengaluru is revolutionising the way people look at meals in the home kitchen. Rajshree Manger Thapa, better known by her online alias Raji, has won many hearts through her personality as well as her approach to incorporating protein into the home meals of the average person without making it complicated or heavy to prepare.
Raji has come to be known through her short, interesting videos that show the viewer the different ways in which small changes to the food that is being prepared can make a big difference in the nutritional value of the food that is being prepared. Her initiative has come to be known as the “protein creativity” movement, where the basic idea is to incorporate some form of protein into the food that is being prepared, whether it is breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
With a cheerful smile, she introduces herself and says, “My name is Raji. I cook in the house of a top engineer of Bangalore, but their food is very different. Welcome to episode two of what engineers of Bangalore eat, and today I will tell you about protein creativity or whatever you want to cook.”
“Be it dal, vegetable, roti, rice, paneer, or chicken should be cooked along with it. If it is paneer then it should be 150 grams and if it is chicken then it should be 100 grams,” she says, breaking down portions in a clear and practical way.
Rather than pushing expensive superfoods or complicated meal plans, Raji focuses on foodstuffs that can be found in the average Indian home. Her recipes centre around the thoughtful combination of foods, such as the combination of lentils and dairy products, the stuffing of flatbreads with cheese, or the inclusion of the right amount of chicken in meals.
In the video provided, Raji makes a stuffed moong dal cheela with mint chutney. As the mixture spreads out in the pan, she adds the cheese to the cheela, showing viewers the possibilities of the classic dish to make it not only filling but also nutritious. “Today’s menu was stuffed moong dal cheela and mint chutney, and I taught you about protein creativity,” she says towards the end of the video.
She captioned the post as, “Protein creativity yaani har khane mein kuch toh bhi karke protein daalna. Aaj meine cheele mein paneer stuff karke protein badhaya. Mein madam ke help se ek recipe sheet banaungi aur aap sabse share bhi karungi.”
What makes Raji different is her ability to relate to people. She is a cook for working professionals in Bengaluru and understands their lifestyle and nutritional needs. Rather than expecting people to make radical changes in their diets, she suggests small changes that can be made in an average home kitchen.
The rise of Raji's online popularity is a reflection of a wider trend in working professionals in cities looking for healthier food options but not enough time to cook. Raji’s use of traditional Indian recipes combined with a focus on protein is a winning formula.nt is her ability to relate to people.
