Mawlynnong: Asia’s Cleanest Village Takes a Step Back for Its Locals

Sundays Reserved for Locals

Recently, the quiet village has started to feel a bit crowded. To give villagers their own space, the Dorbar, the village council, implemented a new rule in January 2026: Sundays are now reserved exclusively for locals. According to online media reports, no new tourists are allowed to arrive on that day.

For many villagers, Sunday is a family day. Most follow Christianity, spending the day attending church, resting, or catching up with relatives. In the past, weekends grew increasingly busy with visitors from Shillong and other parts of Meghalaya. Locals often found themselves guiding tourists instead of enjoying their own homes. Now, they have one day entirely for themselves. Tourists already staying can continue their visit, but new arrivals must wait until Monday.

Cleanliness and Community Pride

Mawlynnong’s reputation as “Asia’s Cleanest Village” dates back to 2003. Bamboo dustbins line the lanes, plastic is avoided, and children actively participate in keeping the streets spotless. For the villagers, cleanliness is more than a habit—it’s a source of pride and identity.

Attractions and Culture

Visitors who explore Mawlynnong on other days will find more than just immaculate streets. The village is a living reflection of the matrilineal Khasi culture, evident in daily life and traditions. Nearby natural wonders, such as the living root bridges and the Sky View bamboo tower, offer unforgettable sights, blending seamlessly with the village’s cultural charm.

A Simple Balance

With Sundays reserved for locals, Mawlynnong maintains a delicate balance between welcoming visitors and preserving its way of life. Church, family, and rest are sacred on one day of the week; the rest of the time, tourists are free to explore, learn, and enjoy the village. This small adjustment ensures that Mawlynnong remains vibrant, authentic, and true to the people who call it home.
